Higher teachers salaries won’t improve student performance

Los Angeles teachers won a 21 percent salary increase, raising the average salary to $106,000 (“L.A. teachers win a 21 % raise under new contract,” Los Angeles Times, Apr. 19). It’s not that teachers don’t deserve the raise. But so much of student performance is beyond the control of even the best teachers.

It will be interesting to see the long-term effects of the new contract.  But if the past is any indication, be prepared to be disappointed.
