Anonymous informers in higher education

The latest blow to the free exchange of ideas in higher education is the establishment of snitching (“Snitches Get Sheepskins as Colleges Train Student Informants,” The Wall Street Journal, Apr. 7). Students are being encouraged to anonymously report their peers who violate campus orthodoxy.

To monitor the new rules, there will be even more bureaucratic bloat. Already the size of college administration has doubled in the last 30 years.  Now it’s going to accelerate because staff will be need to investigate and resolve complaints.  It’s a sad day for higher education in this country.
