One of the hardest tasks facing English teachers is teaching writing (“I Teach Writing. It’s Emotional Work,” Education Week, Aug. 17). That’s because there are so many skills involved.
When I taught English in the Los Angeles Unified School District, I used letters to the editor as a model since they allowed students to express their feelings about issues in the news in a condensed format. Once they developed the wherewithal to do so, they were able in most cases to write longer compositions.
