Admitting students of any race or background who lack the necessary academic ability to handle rigorous work hurts not only them but others as well (“The Truth About Student Mismatch,” The James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal, Aug. 19). That’s the unavoidable truth, but it is being ignored.
When students find themselves over their head, two things happen. They drop out or they claim racism, which causes their teachers to lower standards in order to avoid a lawsuit.
College is not for everyone, nor should it be. It’s altogether possible to have a fulfilling life by learning a trade. No student debt and always in demand.
